Dr. Tariq is a board-certified general internist working at Northern Virginia Family Practice. She also serves as a Public Health Physician for the Fairfax County Community Detoxification Facility. She received her medical degree from UAMS and completed her residency in internal medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She then served as chief resident before joining the faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Tariq was promoted to professor in 2018 and subsequently served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs until 2024, when she relocated to Northern Virginia for family reasons.
Dr. Tariq’s honors include the National Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator, presented by the American College of Physicians in 2010. Tariq has earned numerous teaching awards, including multiple Golden Apple, Gold Sash, and Red Sash awards from her medical students. In 2013, she received the Outstanding Woman Faculty Award, followed by the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2014 and the Master Teacher award in 2022.
She is nationally recognized as an advocate for patients and served on the National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health until 2022. In the non-profit world, she has served on the boards of the Interfaith Center and Just Communities of Arkansas. She served as president of Harmony Health Clinic, providing free medical and dental care to the underserved in Little Rock. She was a member of the transition team for the first Black mayor of Little Rock, Mayor Frank Scott, leading the strategic plan to advance diversity in the city. She is a founding member and trustee of the Madina Institute of Arkansas, an inclusive mosque founded on the tenets of compassion, education, and illumination.
Dr. Tariq is passionate about reducing mental health stigma and advancing preventive health in minority communities, believing it is crucial to empower patients to achieve their healthiest lives with transparency and authenticity.
