In response to the Coronavirus pandemic, American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) in collaboration with the Islamic Medical Association of North American (IMANA), the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) formed a National Muslim Task Force on COVID-19. Together we published this statement to address the needs of the American Muslim Community.

As the fears and risks of COVID-19 increased so did the collaboration between many national American Muslim organizations. Today the task force has grown from 4 to over 40 organizations, bringing together public health and medical professionals, civic and faith leaders, social justice and policy experts to provide a comprehensive response to the needs of American Muslims during this crisis. Here is the most recent statement from the COVID-19 National Muslim Task Force providing the Muslim community critical guidance through this uncertain time.

The major objective of the Task Force is to increase collaboration within the Muslim community and perform outreach to broader healthcare and interfaith communities in order to address the needs of the Muslim community and the American people during this crisis from health and faith perspective. The Task Force intends to serve as a trusted resource for healthcare providers, faith communities and their congregants by providing guidance, evidence-based recommendations, and policy solutions.
The Task Force is an interdisciplinary group of subject matter experts working together to analyze critical issues from every conceivable angle to ensure a holistic, complete, and comprehensive approach to the specific needs and issues impacting the American Muslim. The multifaceted team is also actively engaged in content development for education and mental health, advocacy work for healthcare needs (testing, PPE, etc) and collaborating and highlighting social services for those in need. To streamline the vast scope and expertise of the Task Force, we have created these five subject-matter committees to meet the growing demands posed by the COVID-19 pandemic; Health Professionals, Health Policy, Faith/Figh, Muslim Social Services and Mental Health Professionals Committee.

The National Muslim Task Force on COVID-19 is monitoring this ever-changing situation and is here to help. The Task Force has also signed on, drafted and supported numerous advocacy letters and bills. In the coming weeks, we hope to increase collaboration across other healthcare and public health organizations to effectively and proactively respond to this public health crisis and mitigate its impacts.

Make A Mask

The Health Professional Committee of the National Muslim Taskforce on Covid-19 has initiated the National Muslim Mask-Making Campaign in an effort to centralize resources, coordinate efforts between communities and provide a platform for those interested in volunteering to connect with or start local groups.

Across the nation, health care workers are facing dire shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) including hospital gowns, gloves, and especially face masks. Given the overall crisis, volunteers of all faiths and nationalities have mobilized across the country to determine local needs and see how they can make a contribution. Many are working together to sew face masks and provide healthcare professionals, front line staff working at social service agencies, homeless shelters, police officers, fire fighters, and many others with homemade masks.
