Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification Training
Mental Health First Aid Certification Training
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based 8-hour certification program, which introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health issues like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse, and addictions, and builds understanding of their impact. Similar to how CPR training helps a layperson assist an individual following a heart attack, MHFA teaches non-mental health professionals how to give first aid to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis and/or who are in the early stages of a mental health disorder.
The ultimate objective is to identify and triage individuals who might be suffering from mental health issues in our homes, schools, and communities. Luminaries such as Michelle Obama have taken the training and have testified to its empowerment of individuals to help others deal with mental health issues.Trainer: Abeda Khanam: Named the 2015 Hometown Hero in Education, Abeda Khanam is a science teacher with the New York City Department of Education. Abeda is also a chaplain with the New York State Chaplain Task Force. She is a parental engagement columnist and advocate in the areas of family values, social justice, and mental health. She teaches Mental Health First Aid to her fellow New Yorkers, with the goal of creating robust families and resilient communities.
Audience: The one-day training is appropriate for a wide variety of audiences, including but not limited to community leaders and activists, youth directors, Imams, employers and business leaders, law enforcement personnel, educators, parents, medical providers (e.g., nurses, medical assistants) etc.
