Chicago Mental Health First Aid Trainings

We are meeting the mental health needs of American Muslims!

As COVID-19 is changing our daily reality, there is an important need for Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) to be available virtually. AMHP is excited to announce that we are unrolling a virtual MHFA Program to meet the mental health needs of our communities. The virtual delivery option will better equip family, friends and neighbors to help one another during these difficult times. The Virtual MHFA Program expands AMHP’s ability to provide psychological first aid to the American Muslim community facing uncertainty associated with COVID-19. This program will specifically help front line workers, parents, school teachers, youth, first responders, and faith leaders to build resilience and support themselves and others through this crisis by understanding the basic principles on how to recognize and manage stress and how to lend support to family members, friends, and coworkers during this pandemic.

The AMHP Mental Health First Aid training is a great tool to learn actionable steps that could potentially save someone’s life. I am grateful to have learned more about mental health and now feel better equipped if I were to find myself in a crisis situation.

What is Mental Health First Aid

MHFA is an evidence-based program which introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of common mental health illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addiction. The curriculum for this virtual course comes from the National Council for Behavioral Health and includes expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care. Youth MHFA will include content applicable for adults working with youth experiencing other stressors, including the impact of social media. All content is gender neutral and culturally relevant.

What is the Difference Between Youth & Adult Mental Health First Aid

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is primarily intended for adults to learn how to help young people experiencing mental health challenges or crises. It reviews the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents ages 12-18 and emphasizes the importance of early intervention. The Adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone age 18 and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. The adult course is available in both English and Spanish.

How It Works

The new virtual delivery option includes a 2-hour self-paced course followed by 5-6 hours of Instructor led training delivered virtually through the National Council for Behavioral Health’s learning management system. In order to provide adequate support for the students and maintain the efficacy of the course, a course led by one Instructor will be limited to 10 participants.

Cancellations

This course is valued at $170 per person and is being offered at no cost through generous support by Zakat Chicago to non-profit organizations and individuals serving low-income communities. If you are unable to complete the 2-hour pre-work and participate fully in the 5-6 hour virtual training, you will not be able to receive the certificate.

PLEASE NOTE:

Completion of the form does not guarantee a training event. AMHP will assess needs and commit to conducting training events based on internal capacity and availability of trainers.

What It Costs

With generous support from Zakat Chicago, trainings are being offered for free and limited to only individuals and nonprofit/community organizations serving low-income and underserved communities. Front line workers, first responders, community leaders, school teachers, firefighters, law enforcement, and youth leaders in these communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

MHFA Certificate of Completion

After taking the Mental Health First Aid class, you will receive a certificate. This certificate expires three years from the date of your training.
